THE YEAR THAT BROKE US

Article Image

2001 started soft

TRL was still god

Low-rise jeans still reigned

Britney was on every wall, and we were living off glitter and dial-up ✨

But by the end?

It felt like the world cracked in half—and we all grew up overnight 🕊️

THE YEAR WE BECAME PATRIOTIC

Y2K fashion didn’t die, but it changed 💔

Suddenly red, white, and blue were everywhere—on everything from jeans, jackets, and trucker hats 🇺🇸

Camo pants became hot?? Military jackets were fashion now?? 🪖

And low-rise jeans were still holding on like they had something to prove 😬

Britney + Mandy had every teen girl dressing like they were about to perform at the VMAs 💅

Halter tops, cropped tees, and baby blue EVERYTHING were still running the streets.

Meanwhile, guys were sagging in oversized jerseys + Timberlands like it was a uniform.

THE YEAR WE TRIED TO ESCAPE

Movies this year were all about escape 📼

Shrek made us laugh at every fairytale we grew up with

(and somehow made Smash Mouth relevant again??) 😭

The Fast and the Furious made us want to speed off into the night in a glowing Honda Civic

And Harry Potter?? It dropped in November like ✨magic✨

Suddenly everyone had a wand. Or wanted one. Or just wished the real world looked more like Hogwarts 💫

Escapism wasn’t just distraction anymore—it was survival

THE YEAR WE NEEDED MUSIC

Music hit differently this year 🎶

Alicia Keys dropped Songs in A Minor and every note was a hug you didn’t know you needed 🎹

Destiny’s Child gave us Survivor and we felt that. In our bones. And In our AIM away messages.

Aaliyah’s last album was ethereal. Timeless.💔

And then she was gone. August came and everything went quiet for a minute

Meanwhile, the chaos had a soundtrack

Linkin Park screamed what we couldn’t. System of a Down lit the fuse

And Missy Elliott gave us the weirdest, coolest visuals and beats that still slap

THE YEAR THE WORLD STOPPED

Then came September 11

The world stopped.

Two planes. Three cities. A million questions and not enough answers. 💔

TV paused. Shows disappeared. Red carpets went dark

Everyone was scared—but also… connected in a way we hadn’t been before

Even MySpace felt quiet (for like a minute)

We started using pop culture to cope

To laugh. To cry. To pretend everything wasn’t completely shattered

Patriotism turned into fashion 🇺🇸

Late-night shows got serious

And suddenly, we were old enough to know what fear felt like 😔

THE YEAR THAT ALMOST BROKE US

This wasn’t the year we planned🕊️

But it was the year that made us grow up overnight

We clung to music. Escaped into movies. Rebuilt our mood boards in red, white, and blue

We survived. Barely. Emotionally online.

And we kept going—track 7 on repeat, layout glitched, hoodies pulled tight over our headphones

Tomorrow is 2002 🪩 🕺

Maybe it’ll be lighter. Maybe it won’t. 💿

But we’ll be ready—with burned CDs and baggy jeans.
