THE YEAR WE SPENT ONLINE

Article Image

2006 is almost over, and honestly?

We lived online this year ✨

This year wasn’t just culture—it was a full-on remix.

We weren’t just watching the internet anymore—we were the internet.

Every outfit, every away message, every over-edited selfie was a performance.

And we slayed. Kind of. 🖤

THE YEAR OF ED HARDY

Fashion in 2006 said: more is more ‼️

Layered tanks. Micro-minis. Bootcut jeans that dragged through every puddle.

UGGs on your feet even when it was 70° out because ✨aesthetic✨

Scene queens and emo kids were peaking.

Side bangs so intense you couldn’t see your right eye. Fishnets under shorts. Arm warmers in gym class 😭

And don't forget the eyeliner—heavy, messy, and permanent in our hearts.

Ed Hardy. Hollister. Abercrombie.

Worn all at once like a chaotic brand sandwich

Your fit wasn’t just a look—it was a status update.

THE YEAR WE MET ZAC EFRON

High School Musical dropped and the world exploded 🎤

Suddenly everyone was in love with Zac Efron and pretending they could sing.

"We're All In This Together" became the national anthem for kids with flip phones and feelings.

The Devil Wears Prada gave us Meryl in full savage mode 😈

"Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking." Still quoting. Still shaking.

And yes, we all tried a dramatic glow-up that year. We were Anne Hathaway in our own minds

Pirates of the Caribbean came back and Jack Sparrow was still swaggering his way into everyone's diary entries 🏴☠️

THE YEAR SEXY MADE A COMEBACK

Justin Timberlake literally brought sexy back. Like. In those exact words.

We didn’t ask. He just did it.

And we accepted it 🕺

Beyoncé told us to “Upgrade U” and we tried.

Through glitter fonts and heartbroken AIM away messages 💍

Rihanna had us in our feelings with Unfaithful and Nelly Furtado was suddenly the baddest bird flying.

Timbaland was on every beat.

The Black Eyed Peas were in every playlist.

And Arctic Monkeys & Lily Allen reminded us that internet kids could have chart-topping dreams too 🎧

THE YEAR OF CELEBRITY GOSSIP

The celebrity blogs were brutal this year.

Perez Hilton was doodling devil horns on literally everyone.

Britney, Lindsay, and Paris had paparazzi following them like it was an Olympic sport 📸

Meanwhile, Facebook was starting to eat MySpace’s lunch.

YouTube was growing fast—and suddenly, anyone could go viral off one blurry video and a dream.

Influencer culture was loading... and oversharing was becoming a full-time job.

THE YEAR OF REINVENTION

Lines were getting blurry.

Between real life and the feed. Between fashion and fandom.

Between main character and Top 8.

This year wasn’t perfect. But it was unforgettable.

We cried over profile songs. We posted cryptic blog posts.

We reinvented ourselves—weekly.

Tomorrow is 2007 🪩🖱️

And if 2006 was the warm-up?

Next year’s gonna be a full-blown identity crisis in glitter eyeliner.
