THE YEAR WE SAID GOODBYE

Article Image

2009 is basically done—and it’s giving end of an era energy.

Like… the world didn’t just change.

It evolved.

We said goodbye to the 2000s while frantically uploading new profile pics and learning how to tweet.

This year wasn’t subtle. It was neon, dramatic, and online in all caps ✨

THE YEAR OF FAST FASHION

Fashion this year? Fast. Loud. Slightly unhinged.

Forever 21 was still her.

H&M dropped designer collabs like we could afford them 😭

Neon made yet another comeback, paired with faux leather jackets and combat boots like we were all in some kind of post-apocalyptic music video.

Tumblr style hit hard.

Beanies. Overexposed mirror selfies. Layers that made zero sense but looked amazing in grainy lighting.

We weren’t just dressing to impress—we were dressing to get reblogged.

Fast fashion had us in a chokehold.

And yeah… we were all lowkey addicted to it.

THE YEAR WE WENT FULL 3D

Avatar literally changed movies.

Blue people. Glowy trees. 3D glasses that gave us headaches but also feelings 🌀

James Cameron said “let’s break box office records” and we said “ok slay”

The Hangover hit and suddenly raunchy chaos had a new blueprint.

A tiger in a bathroom. A missing groom. And a baby in sunglasses. Instant classic.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince pulled up with ✨Dumbledore’s last stand✨

It was the beginning of the end—and we felt it in our teen souls 🪄💔

We weren’t ready to let go, but the credits rolled anyway.

THE YEAR KANYE INTERRUPTED

Lady Gaga devoured 2009.

She gave us Paparazzi, Bad Romance, and a VMA performance that belonged in a museum

Blood. Drama. Theater. A moment.

And then… Kanye grabbed that mic.

“Imma let you finish” became a meme, a mood, a cultural shift 🐍

Taylor looked scared. Beyoncé looked confused.

The internet? Immediately exploded.

And then there was Owl City.

Fireflies took over every teenage playlist.

Quirky lyrics. Soft synths. Sad boy magic ✨🪩

It proved bedroom music could go full Billboard.

Oh—and Spotify beta hit the U.S.

The way we listened to music? Changed forever.

THE YEAR THE 2000'S LOGGED OFF

2009 was the last year that felt truly 2000s.

Before influencers had PR teams. Before feeds got filtered.

Before the internet got… scary.

Twitter was blowing up. iPhones were everywhere.

Netflix was done mailing DVDs. Streaming was here.

And so were we. Buffering. Loading. Crying.

We were all still posting on Facebook walls like it was the town square.

The vibes? Chaotic.

The energy? Unmatched.

The nostalgia? Already kicking in.

THE YEAR THAT WE HIT REFRESH

This was the year everything changed.

It was goodbyes in movie theaters, breakdowns at award shows, and glittery selfies on early Instagram filters.

We laughed. We cried. We live-blogged it all.

Tomorrow is 2010 📲🪩

New decade. New drama.

But the 2000s? They’ll never not be iconic.
